Coming Home to the Body

Returning to the body as a place of safety.

Komal Patel

After talking about burnout and the nervous system, there’s one place we have to go next. The body.

So many of us are disconnected from our bodies without even realising it. We live in our heads, analysing, thinking, planning, surviving. And while that may have helped us cope at one point, healing asks for something different. Healing asks us to come home.

Why We Leave the Body

Disconnection from the body often starts early. When feelings felt too big. When emotions weren’t welcomed. When being present didn’t feel safe. So we adapted ourselves. We learned to think instead of feel, to distract instead of sense, and to stay busy instead of embodied.

Leaving the body can look like numbness, overthinking, dissociation, or struggling to rest. This isn’t something to judge. Much like your nervous system, it’s something to understand.

Your body protected you the best way it knew how.

The Body Remembers

Even when the mind moves on, the body holds memory. Stored emotions. Unprocessed grief. Old fear patterns. They all live in the nervous system, the muscles, the breath. This is why you can logically know you’re safe, yet still feel anxious or on edge. Healing happens when the body is included, not ignored.

Embodiment Is a Relationship

Coming home to the body isn’t about forcing yourself to feel everything all at once. It’s about building trust slowly. It can be as simple as noticing your breath. Feeling your feet on the ground. Placing a hand on your heart or belly and asking what you need. Embodiment is learning to listen instead of override, and to respond instead of push.

Why This Changes Everything

When you reconnect with your body, intuition becomes clearer. Boundaries become easier. Rest actually restores. You start noticing when something feels off before burnout hits again. Your body is constantly guiding you. The more you listen, the safer you feel inside yourself.

My Takeaway

Coming home to the body is subtle work. It’s choosing presence over dissociation. Compassion over control. Your body has been with you through everything. It deserves to be part of the healing too.

Before you put pen to paper, let your awareness drop from your head into your body. There’s no need to analyse. Just notice.
