Fillers vs Skin Boosters: What Is the Difference and Who Needs What?
Understanding structure versus skin quality — and why the distinction matters.

One of the most common confusions in aesthetic medicine is the difference between fillers and skin boosters. They are often spoken about together, but they serve very different purposes.
Fillers are structural. They replace volume, support facial contours, and help counteract the bone and fat loss that comes with ageing. When used well, they restore proportion rather than create obvious fullness. When used poorly, they sit in the wrong plane and change how a face moves.
Skin boosters do not build structure. They improve skin quality. Hydration, elasticity, glow, and fine texture are their domain. They work within the skin itself, enhancing how it functions rather than reshaping it.
The mistake I see most often is using fillers to compensate for poor skin quality. This leads to overfilling without addressing the real issue. Conversely, skin boosters cannot lift or replace lost support.
Who needs what depends on age, genetics, lifestyle, and facial anatomy. A patient in their late twenties may need only skin support and collagen stimulation. Someone in their forties or fifties may need both, carefully layered and spaced over time.
The goal is not more treatment. The goal is the right treatment, at the right time, for the right reason.
