Menopause, Skin and Hair Treatments: Working with a Changing Biology

Supporting Skin and Hair Through Hormonal Change

Aug 14, 2026

By Dr Maya Shahsavari

Menopause is not a cosmetic issue, but its effects on the skin and hair are among the most visible changes women experience. What makes this stage particularly difficult is how quickly these changes can occur and how unresponsive the skin can suddenly feel.

Oestrogen plays a critical role in collagen production, hydration, vascular support, and wound healing. As levels decline, skin often becomes thinner, drier, more sensitive, and slower to recover. Hair may shed more diffusely, lose density, and become finer in texture. Treatments that once gave predictable results may suddenly feel less effective.

At this stage, the goal shifts. It is no longer about pushing the skin hard or chasing dramatic change. It is about support, resilience, and maintaining function. Regenerative treatments that encourage collagen production, improve blood flow, and reduce inflammation tend to perform better than aggressive resurfacing or heavy correction.

Barrier repair becomes essential. Hydration is no longer optional. Hair treatments need to focus on scalp health, follicle support, and slowing progression rather than expecting full restoration. In many cases, addressing systemic factors such as sleep, stress, nutrition, and hormonal balance significantly improves aesthetic outcomes.

Menopause is a transition, not a decline. When treatments are aligned with this reality, results feel more natural, more comfortable, and far more sustainable.
