The Rise of Wellness Retreats

Wellness travel expert Madeleine Spencer on the popularity of travelling to foster good health

To some extent, travel has always been about wellness. Whether exploring a new location or returning to a beloved spot, a change of circumstance, scene, and routine awakens the brain, encouraging new ways of thinking, stimulating the senses.

There’s no denying, however, that wellness travel is exponentially on the rise, with retreats and destinations encouraging guests to choose them for their rest/fitness/digestion-related offerings popping up across the globe.

There are things to consider when choosing your wellness destination. Start with your primary goal. If, for example, you sleep poorly at home, perhaps opt for somewhere geared towards sleep. If you find that you are reaching for antacids regularly, looking for somewhere that is centred around gut health would be prudent. And so on and so forth.

Next, location is a huge element, the natural surrounds being a key element to a wellness retreat’s success. Austria, for example, is well known for being keen on making the most of the mountains and lakes, while Thailand’s heat fosters the perfect atmosphere for most restful experiences.

Vital is choosing how draconian you’d like the experience to be. There are retreats that allow you to have relative freedom, to merely have a massage followed by some food and rest. Others dictate your routine more thoroughly, encouraging a strict adherence to rules and timings to encourage you towards your goals. Both are beneficial, though not every personality will be suited to the latter and, even if you sense it might be for you, it’s important to decide if you’re ready to place your trust so fully in a clinic’s hands.

Whichever route you take, do remember that the success of a wellness break isn’t determined merely by how well it goes when out there but also by the impact it has when you return, so do factor in that you might need a little more downtime when back to implement
